Welcome to the Office of the Common Council President.
The President of the Council is elected by the people every four years. John presides at the council meetings, and does not vote on legislation unless to break a tie vote. He is also a member of the Board of Estimate and Contract. When Mayor Griffo became County Executive in 2003, John became Mayor for the remaining part of the year.
John was elected President in 1979, and has been the longest serving Council President in the City of Rome. During his tenure he has worked hard to respond to constituents’ concerns. He has been actively involved in the business community, economic development, youth programs, and senior citizen assistance. During the winter months, John coordinates a volunteer shoveling program for seniors and the disabled members of the community. Also, in cooperation with the Rome Police Department he offers an “Are You Okay” Program.
The Rome Area Chapter of the American Red Cross awarded John with the Community Leadership Award for his outstanding service to the community
With the recipes submitted from community members, John and his wife Maryann organized and continue to sell two cookbooks with the proceeds going to the renovation of Kennedy Arena.
